Mercedes-AMG GT coupe 2024
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT coupe is making a comeback after a year-long break. It now shares mechanical similarities with the recently redesigned SL convertible. While it still retains its V-8 rumble, customer feedback has led to improvements in size, comfort, and practicality, making it a more refined option. Despite not featuring a complex plug-in hybrid powertrain like the recent C 63, S 63, and GLC 63 S models, the new GT coupe offers two models at launch: the GT 55 and GT 63.
The GT 55 boasts a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine with 469 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, while the GT 63 comes with a more powerful version of the same engine, delivering 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. These coupes are expected to offer impressive acceleration, potentially matching the SL's 0-60 mph times of 3.6 seconds for the SL 55 and 3.1 seconds for the SL 63.
In a first for the GT coupe, both versions come with standard all-wheel drive and optional rear seats. While the rear seats may not be spacious, they provide additional functionality for those who prefer the GT coupe over the four-door AMG GT. When it comes to handling, the GT coupe features rear-wheel steering and an AMG-tuned all-wheel drive system that can distribute torque between the front and rear axles as needed.
To enhance comfort, the GT coupe incorporates AMG Active Ride Control, which replaces anti-roll bars with hydraulic lines to maintain stability during cornering and absorb bumps. It also includes a front-axle lift system to prevent scraping on curbs. The coupe offers six drive modes and the option to upgrade to carbon-ceramic brake discs.
The exterior design retains the iconic long hood of the previous AMG GT, giving it a mean and low appearance. Inside, the interior features turbine-style air vents, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a portrait-style touchscreen. The rear hatch is power-operated, and the available rear seats can be folded to accommodate larger items.
While the transition to being twinned with the SL has resulted in a slightly softer and more practical approach, the AMG GT remains the sportiest car in Mercedes' lineup, according to AMG GT lead product manager Matthias Schmidt. However, its ability to rival rear-engine sports cars like the Porsche 911 remains to be seen.
